Roundup Maker to pay $10 Billion to settle Cancer lawsuit

In February 2020, Bayer tried to settle tens of thousands of Monsanto Roundup lawsuits through legal mediation. On June 24, 2020, the company agreed to pay $10 billion to settle litigation across the country.

Bayer will pay more than $10 billion for tens of thousands of lawsuits over the Roundup weed-killing, the company said Wednesday. The German chemical giant said Wednesday it will pay $10.9 billion to settle lawsuits over the weed killer Roundup, which has filed thousands of lawsuits over its cancer.

In addition to the lawsuits over Roundup, the settlement will also expect to cover unresolved claims and another $12.5 billion to support a separate class-action settlement to resolve potential future litigation.

Roundup problem:

The plaintiffs claim that glyphosate, the herbicide in Roundup weedkiller, is a key ingredient in cancer but Roundup manufacturer Monsanto and the German chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer claim that the product is safe. Monsanto maintains that Roundup does not cause cancer, and a 2015 World Health Organization report that surpassed studies said glyphosate in Roundup was safe.

Bayer, which bought Roundup maker Monsanto for $6.3 billion in 2018 has said that it will continue to sell the weed killer and has no plans to put a cancer warning sign on the product. Glyphosate-based Roundup is in broader litigation because it can cause some types of blood cancer. HAS rejected claims that glyphosate or its active ingredient glyphosate can cause cancer, saying that decades of independent studies have shown that it is safe for human use.

Roundup to Pay $10 Billion to Settle Cancer Suits:

German chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer announced on Wednesday that it would pay over $10 billion (8.9 billion euros) to settle more than 125,000 lawsuits related to its Roundup product in a pending class action in the US.

The company said the Roundup weedkiller settlement will close 75% of the 125,000 lawsuits currently filed or unfiled. Bayer reaffirmed on Wednesday that it has settled 75 of these current claims and agreed to end the legal battle it inherited from its $63 billion takeovers of Monsanto in 2018. More than 100,000 U.S. lawsuits alleging that Bayer's use of Roundup caused cancer because the herbicide was used accounted for 95% of the cases, it added.

Bayer chose the calculated gamble because there was no scientific evidence to support its claim that glyphosate, Roundup's active ingredient, was safe for agriculture. Bayer did not add a cancer warning sign to Roundup, which Monsanto first put on the market in 1974, a company spokesman said.

The announcement came after years of lawsuits by cancer patients who claimed Roundup causes non-Hodgkins lymphoma and agrochemicals giant Monsanto failed to warn consumers of the risks. Those who believe they have cancer after taking Roundup have filed lawsuits against Monsanto and Bayer.
